The PhD in Dental Medicine is aimed at dentists with the objective of given them research skills in health sciences and dentistry. At the end of the program, doctorates must be prepared to develop biomedical and clinical research autonomously, in an academic or business environment and in healthcare institutions.
This PhD program is part of the FMDUL mission by associating the objective of excellence in training under and postgraduate studies with the excellence of scientific research in the field of Oral Health Sciences.
The program lasts for 4 years (8 semesters), making up 240 credit units (ECTS). The first year of the PhD program consists primarily of coursework and in the development of the research project. At the end of the first year the student must take the project evaluation before a jury appointed by the Scientific Council. The second, third and fourth years are dedicated to the development of research and the elaboration of the doctoral thesis under the the direction of the research advisor.
Students are encouraged to focus in one of these areas of emphasis:
- Biomaterials and biomechanics,
- Oral biology and biochemistry,
- Oral microbiology,
- Bone biology,
- Epidemiology and oral public health sciences,
- Forensic sciences,
- Digital technologies.
Access Conditions
a) Holders of a master’s degree in Dental Medicine, or legal equivalent, who have obtained a final grade of at least fourteen (14) in a scale of 0 – 20;
b) Holders of a degree in Dental Medicine, or legal equivalent, who have obtained a final grade of at least fourteen (14) in a scale of 0 – 20 and who hold a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the ability to perform of this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Dental Medicine;
c) Exceptionally, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

Application rules
Applicants to the cycle of studies leading to a PhD degree should address na application to the Scientific Council formalizing their application (academicos@fmd.ulisboa.pt).
The application must contain the following information:
a) Discriminatory certificate proving the academic degrees the candidate has, indicating the respective final classifications;
b) Identitycard, citizen’s card or passport.
c) Updated Curriculum Vitae, including published works, properly documented.
d) Letter of expression of intentions.
e) Domain to be investigated, indicating the general objectives to be achieved.
f) Indication of the research advisor(s) proposed by the candidate, and respective acceptance declaration(s).
g) Letters of reference.
h) Other documents that the candidate considers relevant to the evaluation of the respective application.
